-Review speech conclusions
-Begin work on conclusion to the same invention for which you prepared a speech introduction
-During class time, students will watch and self-evaluate speech introductions from first speech
J: R.A.F.T. - You are a journalist reporting (R) to the AHS student body (A) in the form of a newspaper article (F) about either Friday night's game against Creston or Saturday's dance (T)
-Discuss speech outlines and body
-With 3:00 partner, practice preparing support material for speech body outline
*ASSIGN Support Materials Assignment - DUE TOMORROW*
-Begin speech body assignment (due tomorrow by end of class). Choose a topic, your three main points, and two-five sub points for each main point. Then smooth it out with transitions, talk it through, revise it, and finally present it to your 6:00 partner.
Continue building our class speech, using the barebones speech outline.
*ASSIGN:Introducing: Inventions (Steps 1-4 Due Monday; Steps 5-6 Due Tuesday, Introductions delivered on Wednesday, September 30th.)
1) With partners, decide on an invention or product for the topic of your introduction (choose an actual object, tool, game, or product). You will not prepare the entire speech, but you will prepare an INTRODUCTION for a speech, as if the speech itself was to follow.
Ideas for your speech:
History of the Toaster
How Deodorant Came to Be
The Original Ball-point Pen
The Invention of Paintball
Invention of Disposable Diapers
How Modern Makeup Came to Be
The Evolution of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese
2) Because you are preparing only the introduction, you will not need to do the same level of research as for an entire speech. However, you will need to know SOMETHING about your topic in order to CAPTURE our interest, ASSERT your purpose, MOTIVATE us to listen, and PREVIEW what to expect in your speech. Get on the Internet and run a search with these terms: "invention history [your topic]" Find an article that gives you some basic information about the history or development of your invention/product.
3) On your "Introducing... Introductions" page, write examples of the various types of information that can be used in an introduction.
4) With your partner, write a speech introduction that includes these components:
C - CAPTURE our attention and interest!
A - ASSERT the purpose of your speech (what it's gong to be about and how the audience will be affected)!
M - MOTIVATE us to listen (apply it to our lives, show us how this information will be useful)!
P - PREVIEW the main information that will be covered in your speech!
5) Time your introduction. It should be at least 45 seconds long and probably no longer than two minutes. Add (or subtract) material to hit this time zone.
6) Practice delivering your speech to each other. Offer suggestions. HELP each other do well.
7) Prepare note cards; no more than 40 words. C=10, A=10, M= 10, P=10
8) Fill out the evaluation form on the back of the sheet; sign up for delivery.

*Communication Test
Monthly Annotations: In order to meet our objective in ACSD Standard RD03.02 Independent and assisted reading, every Eng2R student will be required to prepare a monthly book annotation on one of the independent reading books they have read. An annotation is a critical or subjective evaluation of a piece of work (something like a book review), usually included in a bibliography or citation. Students will prepare a 150-200 word annotation about their books and post them on the "Reading" page of our Eng303 Wiki. Each student will be responsible for four annotations per semester (preferably one per month). It is my hope that each student will not only enjoy the books they read, but will also enjoy sharing information and their opinion about the books.
J: Describe your room at home in detail. What are you proudest of and why?

Continue building our class speech, using the barebones speech outline.
*ASSIGN: Introducing: Inventions (Steps 1-4 Due Monday; Steps 5-6 Due Tuesday, Introductions delivered on Wednesday, September 30th.)
M - MOTIVATE us to listen (apply it to our lives, show us how this information will be useful)!P - PREVIEW the main information that will be covered in your speech!
